The Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, Right Honourable Justice Dr Jane Ansah and the entire Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for their resounding victory in the September 16th elections.

In a Press Statement, WOLREC Executive Director Maggie Kathewera Banda highlighted the ascension of Dr Ansah to the vice presidency as a historic milestone that reflects the country’s growing commitment to inclusive governance and the advancement of women’s leadership.
Reads part of the statement: “This milestone reflects our tireless efforts through the Women’s Manifesto Movement and initiatives such as the Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth-Inclusive Democracy Project, which continue to advance women’s leadership and empowerment.
“Having a woman at the helm as Vice President not only inspires enriched governance but also fosters more inclusive policies. As one of the champions of the 50:50 Campaign, and with support from our partners Oxfam in Malawi, European Union in Malawi and What Works to Prevent Violence, we remain committed to closing persistent gaps in the pursuit of gender equity in Malawi.”
The Executive Director, however, said the organisation anticipates the incoming DPP administration to ensure equitable representation of women in other leadership positions.
“We expect the government to uphold the aspirations of the Women's Manifesto, including ensuring equitable representation of women in leadership, eliminating gender–based violence and promoting policies that empower women socially and economically,” she said.
“This election is not just a democratic triumph; it is a moment of renewed hope. It underscores Malawi's ability to achieve peaceful transitions while opening greater opportunities for women and girls to contribute meaningfully to national development.”
She reaffirmed WOLREC’s readiness to work in close collaboration with the government, political parties, and civil society to ensure that the promises of democracy are fully realised for all Malawians.
She also hailed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja, for managing the September 16, 2025, General Election with professionalism, transparency and integrity.
“We further salute Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the other candidates in the election for conceding defeat with humility and statesmanship. This has helped to strengthen Malawi’s democracy by prioritizing peace and stability over division, thereby setting an important precedent for future elections,” she added.
