PROJECT PERIOD : 2023 - 2027

IMPACT AREAS : CHIKWAWA

PROJECT NAME

Social Cultural Approach to the Empowerment of Women and Girls

TROCAIRE

The project is implemented in Chikwawa district in Southern Region of Malawi specifically in 10 Group Villages in the areas of Traditional Authorities (TAs) Ngabu and Masache.

WOLREC engages project participants at both district and community level. At district level WOLREC is a member of the Technical Working Group on Gender. Through the committee WOLREC receives technical support in the implementation of activities from members such as the District Gender Officer, the Social Welfare Officer, and the Police Victim Support Unit Coordinator who provide their expertise through facilitation of trainings, provision of services as well as project monitoring, evaluation and learning.

At community level, WOLREC engages communities using SASA! Faith structures. Community Activists (CAs) conduct interactive activities aimed at breaking the culture of silence around issues of violence. The activities target both women and men through existing structures or spaces within the faith communities. Religious leaders as gatekeepers and influencers of norms and beliefs which perpetuate violence against women are also engaged in a transformative process as they take a leading role in facilitating the change process in their faith spaces supported together with the CAs. Beyond the faith communities WOLREC works with community structures responsible for governance and GBV prevention and response such as Area Development Committees and Community Victim Support Units.

Through the establishment of the Community Action Groups (CAGs) under the project, there is improved and well-coordinated support to the program. WOLREC also works with Community Paralegals who are equipped with skills for supporting survivors of violence as cases are managed through the GBV referral pathways.
