Joyce Banda Commits to Women’s Manifesto demands

As the Women’s Manifesto Movement continues to engage presidential candidates in the September 16 General Elections on women’s rights and gender equality, on Wednesday, it presented the Women’s Manifesto booklet to Dr. Joyce Banda, President of the People’s Party and former Head of State of the Republic of Malawi.

During the meeting, the movement led by its Coordinator Maggie Kathewera Banda shared the collective demands, hopes, and aspirations of Malawian women rooted in equality, safety, representation, and economic empowerment.

The former president signed a Commitment Card committing to promoting women’s rights and integrating gender concerns into national development plans when elected in power.

She assured the Movement that, if elected into government, she would continue her efforts to elevate women to high positions.

"I have signed the commitment card and assured them that I will play my part. I served in the presidential office before, and I did my part, Malawians are the best judges," she said.

The Manifesto calls upon all leaders to prioritise the needs of women and girls in their agendas.
